  • ABOUT THIS SERVICE

When do you need a new consumer unit?

The consumer unit divides the power in your home over circuits and protects each circuit against overload and short circuits. RCDs (residual-current devices) cut the power immediately if there is earth leakage, for example when someone touches a faulty appliance. In a new consumer unit, under the NEN 1010 standard, all circuits are behind an RCD, with no more than four circuits per RCD.

You do not have to replace an existing consumer unit just because the standard has changed. With these signs, though, replacing or extending it is sensible:

  • An old fuse box with screw-in fuses or porcelain fuses
  • A circuit that trips when several appliances are on at once
  • A unit without a cover or without clear circuit labelling
  • Circuits that are not behind an RCD
  • Loose or discoloured wiring in the meter cupboard
  • A new kitchen with an induction hob or extra heavy appliances

Do not work in the consumer unit yourself

Even with the main switch off, the cables from the meter to the main switch are still live. Can you smell burning or see smoke near the meter cupboard? Keep away from it and call 112 straight away if there is smoke or fire.

What is included?

  • The labour of the tradesman
  • Advice on the number of circuits and RCDs you need
  • Connecting the consumer unit in line with NEN 1010
  • Testing all circuits and RCDs afterwards
  • Clear circuit labelling on the unit
  • No call-out charge within Almere
  • 1-year guarantee on the work carried out

Not included

  • The consumer unit, RCDs, circuit breakers and cables
  • Upgrading your connection, for example to three-phase — you request that from your grid operator

Replacing an old fuse box

Replacing a consumer unit

We replace an outdated consumer unit with too few RCDs or loose wiring with a new unit with a cover and clear circuit labelling.

Consumer unit with RCDs protecting all circuits

All circuits behind an RCD

When replacing the unit, we divide the circuits so that every circuit is protected, with no more than four circuits per RCD, as NEN 1010 requires.

Extra electrical circuit added to the consumer unit

Extending a consumer unit

Does a circuit trip when the washing machine, dryer and dishwasher run at the same time? With an extra circuit you spread the load better across the unit.

Cooker circuit in the consumer unit for connecting an induction hob

Cooker circuit for induction

Most induction hobs need their own cooker circuit across two circuits, with a Perilex connection. We run the cooker circuit from the consumer unit.

The job turned out to be quite a bit bigger once he had assessed it. But he thought along with me and did a lovely job. Very professional and very friendly. I will definitely call again. Highly recommended!

A response within 5 minutes, at the door within a few hours. Thinks along with you and works really neatly. He even drove to the DIY store to get a special little extension piece so everything could be finished even better. I can truly recommend Mohammed, my best experience so far, and the bar is high.

Quick response and the job was done quickly and expertly. What I really appreciated was that afterwards I got a phone call asking whether everything had been done to my satisfaction, and saying I could always call if anything turned out not to be right - which was not the case.

The consumer unit and what comes with it

A new consumer unit often goes together with other jobs. If you are switching to induction, we also cap the old gas pipe; read more about capping a gas pipe. With a new kitchen we connect the sink, tap and dishwasher: see kitchen installation.

We fill in chases in the wall and finish them neatly with plastering and painting. More small jobs? Combine them in one visit: see maintenance and renovation. What a visit costs can be found on our prices page.

  • FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Questions about the consumer unit

Is your question not listed? Feel free to call or WhatsApp us, also outside office hours.

What does replacing a consumer unit cost?

We charge €181.44 incl. VAT (€149.95 excl. VAT) for the first hour on site and after that €108.84 incl. VAT (€89.95 excl. VAT) per hour. Outside Almere there is an additional €42.35 call-out charge. On top of that come the consumer unit and the materials, depending on the number of circuits. Send a photo of your meter cupboard and we will give you a quote in advance.

How long does replacing a consumer unit take?

In an ordinary home a consumer unit is usually replaced within a day. During the work the power is off for a few hours; we agree with you in advance when suits you best.

Do I have to replace my old consumer unit?

No, it is not compulsory. An existing consumer unit does not have to be replaced just because the NEN 1010 standard has changed. With screw-in fuses, circuits without an RCD or damaged parts, we do recommend replacing it.

How many circuits can go on one RCD?

In a new consumer unit no more than four, under NEN 1010. If an RCD trips, it is not the whole home that loses power, only part of it.

Do I need a separate circuit for an induction hob?

Usually, yes. Most induction hobs are connected to a cooker circuit across two circuits with a Perilex connection. Large or extra-wide models sometimes need three-phase power; this is stated on the hob's rating plate.

Do I get a guarantee on the work?

Yes. You get a 1-year guarantee on the work carried out and a 4 to 5-year guarantee on the products.
