Lelystad is a young town on the bed of the former Zuiderzee, some three metres below sea level. On 28 September 1967 the first residents received their keys, in what is now the Zuiderzeewijk. In the mid-1970s building continued in every direction, and from 1980 the Waterwijk followed. Lelystad-Haven is even older: workers were already living on the construction island there from 1951.
In the oldest neighbourhoods, such as the Zuiderzeewijk, many homes are now more than fifty years old. Some have been renovated in recent years, but taps, traps, drains and sealant are often due for replacement, and pipes are sometimes still in the original floor or wall.
The sewer also needs attention. In a 2021 survey by the municipality, 18 per cent of the residents questioned reported problems with the sewer in the previous five years, such as a blockage, a leak or a bad smell. If the garden and street sink relative to the house, a sewer connection can come under strain or start to leak.
