When do sewer pipes need replacing?
A sewer pipe lasts a long time, but not for ever. Over time a pipe can sink or crack, joints can come loose and tree roots can grow in. Unblocking then only helps for a while: because the pipe itself is damaged, the blockage keeps coming back. We first trace where it goes wrong and then replace only the section that is no longer sound.
Sewer problems happen in Lelystad too. In the municipality’s 2021 sewer survey, 18% of the 1,102 panel members said they had had problems with the sewer in the previous five years, such as a blockage, a leak or a bad smell. Land subsidence also plays a part: the municipality names it as a building risk in the city. What is the difference between unblocking and replacing sewer pipes?
When we unblock, we remove a blockage from a pipe that is otherwise in good order. If the blockage keeps coming back, the pipe has often sunk, cracked or had roots grow into it. In that case only replacing it really helps.
Does the whole garden have to be dug up?
No. We only dig where the pipe is broken or where the new pipe is going. We carefully lift the paving slabs and bricks and put them back after the work.
How long does it take to replace a sewer pipe?
We usually replace a short section of pipe within a day. If the pipe is longer or a lot of digging is needed, it takes more time; we discuss that with you in advance. While we work, you cannot use the drain for a few hours.
Can I have a drain rerouted for my renovation?
Yes. Let us know in good time, that is, before the floor is closed up or the kitchen or bathroom is fitted. We then lay the drain in the right place and with enough fall, so that the water can drain away properly.
