The job turned out to be quite a bit bigger once he had assessed it. But he thought along with me and did a lovely job. Very professional and very friendly. I will definitely call again. Highly recommended!

- ABOUT THIS SERVICE
When do you need a new consumer unit?
The consumer unit divides the electricity in your home over several circuits. Each circuit is protected against overload and short circuits. An RCD (residual-current device) cuts the power immediately as soon as there is leakage current, for example when someone touches a faulty appliance. Under the Dutch standard NEN 1010, every circuit in a new consumer unit is behind an RCD, with no more than four circuits per RCD.
A change in the standard does not mean your existing consumer unit has to go. Replacing or extending it is sensible, though, if you recognise one of these signs:
- An old fuse box with screw-in fuses or porcelain fuses
- A circuit that trips when several appliances are on at once
- A unit without a cover or without clear circuit labelling
- Circuits that are not behind an RCD
- Loose or discoloured wiring in the meter cupboard
- A new kitchen with an induction hob or extra heavy appliances
Do not work in the consumer unit yourself
Even when the main switch is off, there is still voltage on the cables between the meter and the main switch. If you smell burning or see smoke at the meter cupboard, do not touch it. If there is smoke or fire, call 112 immediately.
What is included?
- The labour of the tradesman
- Advice on the number of circuits and RCDs you need
- Connecting the consumer unit in line with NEN 1010
- Testing all circuits and RCDs afterwards
- Clear circuit labelling on the unit
- Clarity on the rate and call-out charge in advance
- 1-year guarantee on the work carried out
Not included
- The consumer unit, RCDs, circuit breakers and cables
- Upgrading your connection, for example to 3-phase: you apply for that with your grid operator
- Call-out charge in Lelystad: €42.35 incl. VAT per visit
- OUR SERVICES
What can we help you with?
Replacing an old fuse box
Do you still have an old fuse box with screw-in fuses or porcelain fuses? We replace it with a modern consumer unit with RCDs and circuit breakers.
Replacing a consumer unit
Does your consumer unit have too few RCDs, or is there loose wiring in it? Then we fit a new unit with a cover and clear circuit labels.
All circuits behind an RCD
When we replace the unit, we divide the circuits so that every circuit is protected. Each RCD gets no more than four circuits, as NEN 1010 requires.
Extending a consumer unit
Does a circuit trip when the washing machine, the dryer and the dishwasher are on at the same time? An extra circuit spreads the load better across your unit.
Cooker circuit for induction
Most induction hobs need their own cooker circuit across two circuits, with a Perilex connection (the Dutch cooker socket). We run that cooker circuit from the consumer unit.
Unsure about your consumer unit?
Send us a photo of your meter cupboard via WhatsApp. We will assess whether replacing or extending it is needed and what the job involves.

An electrician in Lelystad, near you
From Almere we drive via the A6 to Lelystad. We work in every neighbourhood, from Bolder and the Boswijk to the Kustwijk and Warande. When we can be with you depends on how busy we are. We tell you honestly as soon as you call.
In 1967 the first residents of Lelystad got their keys, in what is now the Zuiderzeewijk. Many homes there have recently been renovated. If your meter cupboard still has an old fuse box or a consumer unit without RCDs, we are happy to check whether it needs replacing. Do you rent your home, for example from the housing association Centrada? Then contact your landlord first. If you are allowed to call in a tradesperson yourself, we are happy to help.

The consumer unit and what comes with it
A new consumer unit often comes with other jobs. If you choose induction, we also cap off the old gas pipe; you can read more about that under capping off a gas pipe. If you are getting a new kitchen, we connect the sink, the tap and the dishwasher: see kitchen installation.
We fill in any chases cut into the wall and finish them neatly; see plastering and painting. Do you have more small jobs? Have them done in one visit; see maintenance and renovation. You can read what a visit costs under our prices.

Questions about the consumer unit
Is your question not listed here? Feel free to get in touch by phone or WhatsApp, outside office hours too.
What does it cost to replace a consumer unit in Lelystad?
The first hour on site costs €181.44 incl. VAT (€149.95 excl. VAT), and each additional hour €108.84 incl. VAT (€89.95 excl. VAT). In Lelystad there is also one fixed call-out charge of €42.35 incl. VAT (€35 excl. VAT). The consumer unit and the materials come on top of that; the cost depends on the number of circuits. Send us a photo of your meter cupboard and you will get a fixed-price quote in advance.
How long does replacing a consumer unit take?
In an average home, the consumer unit is usually replaced within a day. The power is off for a few hours while we work. We agree with you in advance when suits you best.
Do I have to replace my old consumer unit?
It is not compulsory. A change to the NEN 1010 standard is no reason to replace an existing consumer unit. If you still have screw-in fuses, circuits without an RCD or damaged parts, we do advise replacing it.
How many circuits can go on one RCD?
Under NEN 1010, no more than four in a new consumer unit. If an RCD trips, the power only goes off in part of the home, not in the whole house.
Do I need a separate circuit for an induction hob?
In most cases, yes. An induction hob is usually connected to a cooker circuit across two circuits, with a Perilex connection. Large or extra-wide models sometimes need three-phase power. You can check this on the hob’s rating plate.
Do I get a guarantee on the work?
Yes. You get a 1-year guarantee on the work we carry out, and 4 to 5 years on the products we install.
